Built in 1609 by Duncan Campbell of Glenorchy, Barcaldine Castle is set in an idyllic scenic location on the shores of Loch Creran, approximately 10 miles north of the town of Oban. The countryside surrounding Barcaldine is steeped in ancient history, with prehistoric standing stones, and burial mounds scattered across the landscape. Known locally as the ‘Black Castle,’ Barcaldine is reputedly the place where the Clan Campbell connived to destroy their ancestral foes the MacDonalds, in the ‘Massacre of Glencoe.’  By the end of 19th Century, the castle had fallen into a ruinous state, but has been carefully restored and now offers a highly unique and atmospheric travel experience for the discerning visitor seeking the ‘Real Scotland.’

Barcaldine’s setting is ideal for those seeking a tranquil break, yet the castle is still conveniently located within easy reach of Oban by car; the town offers a good selection of modern supermarkets, bars, and restaurants. A stone’s throw from the castle is the tiny village of Benderloch, which has a small beach and village store for everyday necessities. World class scenery is within walking distance of Barcaldine, and further afield iconic Scottish destinations such as Glencoe, Castle Stalker, and Ben Nevis can easily be reached by car. Barcaldine is perfect for those who ‘want to get away from it all,’ and relax in a truly stunning and historic setting but at the same time want a good selection of outdoor activities and visitor attractions to keep them occupied.
